Pollitt Signs and Graphics — Harford County
Hand-carved and sandblasted signs in wood, HDU, and stone, fabricated in-house in Havre de Grace since 1947 for historic districts, estates, and town welcome signs. Serving businesses in Bel Air and Harford County since 1947.
Carved and sandblasted signs are a Pollitt specialty, hand-carved and fabricated entirely in-house at our Havre de Grace shop rather than farmed out to another vendor. We work in high-density urethane (HDU), natural wood, and stone to create deeply dimensional, hand-finished signs — raised carved letters, sandblasted wood-grain backgrounds, and finishing options like gold leaf and hand-painted detail that a flat-printed sign simply can't reproduce. It's the same craft behind projects like the carved Havre de Grace town welcome sign, and it's what we bring to historic district storefronts, estate entrances, HOA and community entrances, and businesses that want a sign built to last for decades. Because carved signs so often go into locations with design review boards — historic districts, town rights-of-way, HOA communities — our in-house permit department handles those applications and variances for you from start to finish.
Bel Air is our strongest market — we've built signs for businesses along Main Street's historic downtown core, the Harford Mall area on Route 924, Rock Spring Road, and the Route 1 commercial corridor for decades. The county seat's mix of professional services, retail, restaurants, and medical offices along Thomas Run Road calls for a wide range of sign types. Downtown Main Street may need a carved or post-and-panel sign that fits the historic district character; the Route 1 and Route 924 corridors need high-visibility channel letters or pylon signs readable at 45 mph. We've navigated both contexts many times.
All carved & sandblasted signs installations in Bel Air require sign permits through the Harford County Department of Planning and Zoning. As a Harford County sign company with over seven decades of permitting experience, our dedicated permit department handles the application, setback compliance review, and any variance requests. Harford County routes sign permit applications through its Planning and Zoning office, and most standard applications are reviewed within 2–4 weeks of submission. Illuminated signs and any request that exceeds the standard height, size, or setback limits for the property's zoning district typically require a variance hearing before the county's Board of Appeals. You focus on your business; we handle the paperwork.
Bel Air's historic Main Street setting shapes how we approach carved & sandblasted signs here. Historic Main Street districts often restrict sign materials and prohibit internally lit cabinets, which is exactly where hand-carved HDU or wood signs fit — they read as permanent and appropriate to the district without needing a variance for illumination.
