Pollitt Signs and Graphics — Harford County
Hand-carved and sandblasted signs in wood, HDU, and stone, fabricated in-house in Havre de Grace since 1947 for historic districts, estates, and town welcome signs. Serving businesses in Joppa and Harford County since 1947.
Carved and sandblasted signs are a Pollitt specialty, hand-carved and fabricated entirely in-house at our Havre de Grace shop rather than farmed out to another vendor. We work in high-density urethane (HDU), natural wood, and stone to create deeply dimensional, hand-finished signs — raised carved letters, sandblasted wood-grain backgrounds, and finishing options like gold leaf and hand-painted detail that a flat-printed sign simply can't reproduce. It's the same craft behind projects like the carved Havre de Grace town welcome sign, and it's what we bring to historic district storefronts, estate entrances, HOA and community entrances, and businesses that want a sign built to last for decades. Because carved signs so often go into locations with design review boards — historic districts, town rights-of-way, HOA communities — our in-house permit department handles those applications and variances for you from start to finish.
The Route 40 and I-95 interchange near Joppa is one of Harford County's busiest commercial nodes, with gas stations, hotels, fast food, and retail competing for highway travelers' attention. Signs here need to be highly visible at highway speeds — large, illuminated, and readable from both directions on Route 40. The Joppa Road corridor extending south toward the Gunpowder River serves a different mix of industrial tenants, contractors, and neighborhood retail businesses with different signage needs. We've built pylon signs for the interchange area and wall signs, channel letters, and monument signs for the surrounding commercial streets.
All carved & sandblasted signs installations in Joppa require sign permits through the Harford County Department of Planning and Zoning. As a Harford County sign company with over seven decades of permitting experience, our dedicated permit department handles the application, setback compliance review, and any variance requests. Harford County routes sign permit applications through its Planning and Zoning office, and most standard applications are reviewed within 2–4 weeks of submission. Illuminated signs and any request that exceeds the standard height, size, or setback limits for the property's zoning district typically require a variance hearing before the county's Board of Appeals. You focus on your business; we handle the paperwork.
Joppa's high-traffic interchange location shapes how we approach carved & sandblasted signs here. Hand-carved signage is rarely the right call at a highway interchange, where legibility at speed and from a distance matters more than craftsmanship detail, so carved work in these locations is usually a secondary identification element rather than the primary road sign.
