Pollitt Signs and Graphics — New Castle County
Hand-carved and sandblasted signs in wood, HDU, and stone, fabricated in-house in Havre de Grace since 1947 for historic districts, estates, and town welcome signs. Serving businesses in Newark and New Castle County since 1947.
Carved and sandblasted signs are a Pollitt specialty, hand-carved and fabricated entirely in-house at our Havre de Grace shop rather than farmed out to another vendor. We work in high-density urethane (HDU), natural wood, and stone to create deeply dimensional, hand-finished signs — raised carved letters, sandblasted wood-grain backgrounds, and finishing options like gold leaf and hand-painted detail that a flat-printed sign simply can't reproduce. It's the same craft behind projects like the carved Havre de Grace town welcome sign, and it's what we bring to historic district storefronts, estate entrances, HOA and community entrances, and businesses that want a sign built to last for decades. Because carved signs so often go into locations with design review boards — historic districts, town rights-of-way, HOA communities — our in-house permit department handles those applications and variances for you from start to finish.
Newark's Main Street serves the University of Delaware community — restaurants, retail, and services that cater to students, faculty, and the surrounding suburban market. The Route 896 and Route 72 commercial corridors beyond Main Street serve a broader suburban area with different visibility dynamics and sign type requirements. New Castle County sign permits follow Delaware's commercial sign code, which differs from Maryland's in several key ways — notably around illuminated sign setback requirements and square-footage calculations by street frontage. Our team handles Delaware permit submissions, knows the New Castle County Land Use review process, and coordinates with the Delaware Department of Transportation when highway signs require state-level review.
All carved & sandblasted signs installations in Newark require sign permits through the New Castle County Department of Land Use. As a New Castle County sign company with over seven decades of permitting experience, our dedicated permit department handles the application, setback compliance review, and any variance requests. New Castle County's Department of Land Use generally reviews standard commercial sign permit applications in about 4–6 weeks. Delaware's sign code calculates maximum allowable size by street frontage and sets specific setback and illumination rules that differ from Maryland's, so oversized or illuminated requests commonly trigger a variance, and signs proposed within New Castle's historic district must also clear the town's historic area commission before a permit is issued. You focus on your business; we handle the paperwork.
Newark's historic Main Street setting shapes how we approach carved & sandblasted signs here. Historic Main Street districts often restrict sign materials and prohibit internally lit cabinets, which is exactly where hand-carved HDU or wood signs fit — they read as permanent and appropriate to the district without needing a variance for illumination.
