Pollitt Signs and Graphics — New Castle County
Hand-carved and sandblasted signs in wood, HDU, and stone, fabricated in-house in Havre de Grace since 1947 for historic districts, estates, and town welcome signs. Serving businesses in Wilmington and New Castle County since 1947.
Carved and sandblasted signs are a Pollitt specialty, hand-carved and fabricated entirely in-house at our Havre de Grace shop rather than farmed out to another vendor. We work in high-density urethane (HDU), natural wood, and stone to create deeply dimensional, hand-finished signs — raised carved letters, sandblasted wood-grain backgrounds, and finishing options like gold leaf and hand-painted detail that a flat-printed sign simply can't reproduce. It's the same craft behind projects like the carved Havre de Grace town welcome sign, and it's what we bring to historic district storefronts, estate entrances, HOA and community entrances, and businesses that want a sign built to last for decades. Because carved signs so often go into locations with design review boards — historic districts, town rights-of-way, HOA communities — our in-house permit department handles those applications and variances for you from start to finish.
Wilmington's Market Street corridor, the Riverfront development at the Christina River, and the surrounding corporate office districts present very different signage contexts. The Riverfront's mixed-use character calls for modern illuminated channel letters and LED monument signs; the historic Market Street district requires sensitivity to the surrounding 19th-century architectural fabric and Delaware's historic review process. Our permit team manages Delaware Department of Transportation coordination where required for signs visible from I-95 or Route 202, and handles New Castle County Land Use submissions for the commercial sign permit review process, which runs 4–6 weeks for most standard applications.
All carved & sandblasted signs installations in Wilmington require sign permits through the New Castle County Department of Land Use. As a New Castle County sign company with over seven decades of permitting experience, our dedicated permit department handles the application, setback compliance review, and any variance requests. New Castle County's Department of Land Use generally reviews standard commercial sign permit applications in about 4–6 weeks. Delaware's sign code calculates maximum allowable size by street frontage and sets specific setback and illumination rules that differ from Maryland's, so oversized or illuminated requests commonly trigger a variance, and signs proposed within New Castle's historic district must also clear the town's historic area commission before a permit is issued. You focus on your business; we handle the paperwork.
Wilmington's dense urban commercial fabric shapes how we approach carved & sandblasted signs here. City historic districts frequently require sign materials that carved HDU or wood satisfy more easily than an illuminated cabinet, so carved signage is a common route to first-submission approval in a neighborhood with its own design review board.
